SE Student Spotlight – Noah Meyer (SE ’23)

Noah Meyer, SE Peer Mentor

What influenced your decision to choose Software Engineering? Tell us a little bit about your path getting here.

I took a few Computer Science classes in high school, and I was interested in a career in tech.

Where is your “hometown”? Fun fact about home?

I am from Bettendorf, Iowa and while it isn’t the birthplace of Whitey’s Ice Cream, it’s one of the few places that has a store.

Make friends with the people you see in your classes!” – Noah Meyer (SE ’22)

What other things are you involved in at the university?

I have been a Peer Mentor for the Software Engineering Learning Community for the past two years.

Could you tell us a little more about your Learning Community Peer Mentor experience at Iowa State? Favorite memories?

I have really enjoyed my time as a Peer Mentor because it helped me build stronger connections within the department and it’s been rewarding to see my mentees succeed in their college career. One of my favorite memories is hosting the annual SELC Ultimate Frisbee event in the fall.

What was your favorite part of student life? And why?

I like the close-knit community that comes with being on a college campus. As well as being able to walk everywhere I need to go.

Who has had the biggest impact on you and why?

At Iowa State my freshman year Learning Community Peer Mentor, Caroline, encouraged me to get more involved with the department and find my niche.

Have you had an internship? If so, when and where?

I have had three internships with John Deere, both online and in Urbandale, Iowa.

If so, what role did you play? What did you like most about your role?

I was on a different embedded systems software development team for each internship. I really enjoyed working on actual projects that were being utilized by real customers.

What are your plans after graduation?

I will be returning to John Deere to work on another embedded systems software engineering development team in Urbandale, Iowa.

If you could give an incoming SE Program student advice, what would it be?

Make friends with the people you see in your classes! Most likely they’ll be there for the next four years, so you might as well get to know them.

What’s one random fun fact about yourself you’d be willing to share?

In my family’s freezer, rests a preserved hummingbird that has been in there for 12 years. It is not named but it is an important member of our family.

Please share any other accomplishments, interests, travel or activites (outside of school) that interest you.

I like to hammock, read, longboard around campus, boulder, or just generally be outside and touch grass.
