SE Student Spotlight – Craig Omozeje

What influenced your decision to choose Software Engineering?

I decided to pursue Software Engineering because I have a deep passion for playing and creating games. Software engineering offers the perfect avenue to develop the technical skills required for game development and to bring my creative ideas to life.

Where is your “hometown”? Fun fact about home?

I’m originally from Lagos, Nigeria. One intriguing fact about Lagos is despite its status as the smallest Nigerian state in terms of land area, it boasts the highest population in the entire country. It’s a fascinating contrast.

Having such a mentor has been transformative.” – Craig Omozeje (speaking about Coach Kyven Gadsen)

What are you involved in at the university (or off)?

  • ISU Wrestling Club: I’m actively involved in the ISU Wrestling Club. This commitment reflects my dedication to physical fitness and competitive sports.
  • Game Dev Club: I’m also a member of the Game Dev Club, which aligns with my interests in game development and the broader realm of technology and design.

What was your favorite part of student life? And why?

What I love most about student life is the freedom and flexibility it offers. The ability to make choices, set my schedule, and explore various academic and non-academic pursuits on my terms is incredibly rewarding.

Who has had the biggest impact on you and why?

One of the most influential figures in my life is Coach Kyven Gadson, who also works at Iowa State. He has been a motivating force, not just pushing me to work hard but instilling in me the belief I can achieve anything I set my mind to. Having such a mentor has been transformative.

If you could give an incoming SE Program student advice, what would it be?

To incoming Software Engineering Program students, I would advise them to stay motivated, work hard, and believe in their potential. Exploring extracurricular activities and opportunities on campus can also greatly enrich their university experience.

Could you tell us a little more about your experience at Iowa State? Favorite memories?

One standout memory from my freshman year was watching a UFC fight with friends in our campus theater. It was a great way to relax, bond with friends, and enjoy some entertainment.

What’s one random fun fact about yourself you’d be willing to share?

Outside of academics, I also pursue Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). It’s a physically demanding and mentally stimulating sport that has taught me discipline, dedication, and the importance of staying fit.
