Meet the Peer Mentors

 

Jawad Ali

Major: Software Engineering

Year: Sophomore

Bio: Jawad Ali is a sophomore from Des Moines, Iowa majoring in Software Engineering with a minor in Cybersecurity. When he’s not immersed in coding, you can find him playing video games, hitting the soccer field, or working out at the gym. Jawad is also a member of Science Bound, a program at Iowa State that helps increase the number of diverse students pursuing degrees in STEM fields. He is also a player on the Varsity Esports Call of Duty team at Iowa State. Jawad is passionate about using technology to solve real-world problems and making the tech field more inclusive for everyone. He can’t wait to meet all of the incoming freshmen and help them on their journeys at Iowa State!

Sierra/Izumi Brown
Major: Software Engineering

Year: Junior

Bio: Sierra/Izumi Brown is a junior majoring in software engineering with a minor in music technology. She is originally from Tokyo, Japan, but spent the majority of her life in West Des Moines, Iowa. She enjoys playing video games, listening to music, and being a part of the Martial Arts Club. She is excited to meet all of the incoming freshmen, and help their way through their first year.

Kayley Clark
Major: Software Engineering

Year: Senior

Bio: Kayley Clark is a Senior in Software Engineering with a minor in Cyber Security. From the small town of Tipton, IA, Kayley is most likely to be spotted on campus speedwalking to classes unless she is in front of the Carlos Quesadilla stand. Kayley is also involved with the Engineering Career Fair Executive team and can answer all things Career Fair! Outside of the classroom she loves to spend plenty of time with her friends, at the gym, or trying new food. Kayley is so excited to meet the new students this year and help them find their paths as a Cyclone.

 

Nayma Garcia
Nayma Garcia, SE Peer Mentor
Major: Software Engineering

Year: Junior

Bio: Nayma Garcia is a junior majoring in Software Engineering from Spencer, IA. In her free time, she enjoys going to concerts, hanging out with friends, and skating around campus. Nayma is looking forward to working with all of the incoming students and helping them navigate life at Iowa State.

Eli Newland

Major: Software Engineering

Year: Junior

Bio: Eli Newland is a junior studying Software Engineering from Norwalk, IA. When not doing school work, Eli enjoys making music on the piano or guitar, spending time outside, or cracking jokes with his friends. He is a member of Grandma Mojos Improv Comedy troop and also plays in the Iowa State Organ studio. He is excited to help incoming freshmen fall in love with Iowa State.

Kiishi Osomo

Major: Software Engineering

Year: Sophomore

Bio: Iteoluwakishi Osomo is a sophomore in Software Engineering minoring in Cybersecurity Engineering. Some of her favorite things to do during her free time include crocheting, watching movies, and playing games. Kiishi is an ambivert at heart and loves spending time with her friends almost as much as she loves simply being indoors. She is super excited to meet incoming freshmen this semester and aims to be a supportive influence as they start their journey here at Iowa State!

Sonia Patil

Major: Software Engineering

Year: Senior

Bio:
Sonia Patil is a sophomore majoring in Software Engineering with a minor in Cybersecurity from West Des Moines, Iowa. Outside of class, you can find her climbing at Lied, finding some sort of caffeine, or hamocking around campus. Sonia is also in the Iowa State Cyclone Football ‘Varsity’ Marching Band and the Women’s Basketball Pep band where you can find her cheering for our athletes. She loves to be active, whether it’s martial arts or simply being outdoors. Sonia is incredibly excited to be a peer mentor this year and can’t wait to meet everyone!

Justin Soberano

 

Major: Software Engineering

Year: Senior

Bio: Justin Soberano is a senior in Software Engineering from Spencer, IA. Outside of class, he loves to listen to music, hang out with friends, and skateboarding around campus. On campus, you’ll probably see him miss the bus for the third time in a row and doing his homework last minute. Justin has had an absolute blast these past few years and is excited to be part of all incoming students’ first experiences at Iowa State.
