Student Support

The College of Engineering supports your success from initial recruitment to graduation. We have dedicated engineering faculty and staff to provide support and individually mentor students. The advising and support resources show below are designed to ease your transition into the Software Engineering program, help you and your family feel comfortable within our campus environment, and assist with developing the confidence you need to succeed with your educational goals.

Academic Advising

Your Software Engineering advisor is a dedicated resource to help you with all aspects of your curricular planning, including:

  • Understanding degree requirements
  • Course selection, registration, and schedule changes
  • Transferring coursework and credits
  • Interpretation of Program, College, and University policies
  • Navigation of University resources and systems

You will be empowered to take an active role in the advising process by making decisions best suited for your circumstances. This relies on open and active communication; ensure you are checking your Iowa State email frequently and alerting your advisor to any questions or concerns.

Student Responsibilities

  • Attend scheduled appointments and maintain email and phone contact with your advisor each semester.
  • Come prepared to each appointment with questions or material for discussion.
  • Be an active learner and ask questions if you do not understand.
  • Accept the consequences of their academic and personal decisions and take responsibility for their academic progress and goal attainment.
  • Register for appropriate courses in accordance with advice from their advisor and accept responsibility for accuracy of their schedules.
  • Access and review degree audit information and develop and update their academic plan on a regular basis.
  • Carefully consider and follow through on advisor recommendations.

  • Understand and follow the College of Engineering Basic Program guidelines.

Advisor Responsibilities

  • Provide academic support to ensure successful progression to graduation.
  • Guide decision-making and responsible development of educational plans for achievement.
  • Provide information and strategies for using university resources and services.
  • Monitor and accurately document progress.
  • Maintain confidentiality pursuant to FERPA.
  • Be knowledgeable about university, college and departmental policies and procedures and the graduation requirements.
  • Be accessible and responsive to their advisees via office hours, phone and/or email.
